Paul Cut offers up his eight-track ‘Circle People’ LP via France’s Automatic Writing this September, a collection of cuts showcasing his twist on contemporary deep house. A prominent figure of the French scene and beyond, producer, DJ and keyboardist from France Paul Cut has established himself over the past decade through releases on the likes of the esteemed Ron Trent & Chez Damier label Balance and Chez’s solo offshoot Inner Balance, D’Julz’ Bass Culture, Silver Network, D.KO Records and of course Automatic Writing where he returns here. Beyond this, Cut has also collaborated with the iconic House pioneer Larry Heard, being featured as a keyboard player on two recent LP’s, yet another striking sign of Paul’s inherent ability to instil soul and warmth intro the productions he graces. Across the eight-track project, Paul Cut showcases his signature Soul and Jazz infused Deep House style, setting the tone with opener ‘Together’ and its heavenly pad work, swaying bass groove and jazz percussive touches. The aptly title ‘Shady Nasty’ then shifts things into a rawer direction with gritty dubbed out stabs, raw drums and hypnotic vocal chants. ‘Some Of You’ then dives back into the deeper end of the house spectrum with heavily swung drums, glitched out synth sequences and a bouncy bass line. ‘On The Rocks’ follows as a perfect accompaniment on the B-side fusing an amalgamation of breathy female vocal chants, and male vocal chops with a weighty bottom end groove and crisp, reduced drums. Opening the second half of the project is ‘Life’, merging tribal-tinged percussion with processed vocal lines, and snaking subs before ‘She Comes Around’ shifts gears down to a murky dropped tempo Nu-Disco leaning aesthetic via squelchy acid bass licks, fluttering resonant tones, dynamic drums and warped, psychedelia infused vocals. ‘You Sexy Thang’ leans back into true Deep House realms next with ethereal atmospherics, swinging drum breaks and an ever-unfolding feel. ‘Solar Funk’ then concludes the package with dreamy keys, an off-kilter rhythm section and subtly unfurling pads carrying the mesmeric groove throughout.
